The Story of the TUIT

When I first went into business in 1983, I had the wonderful privilege of attending a full day seminar with nearly 1000 people, put on by Zig Ziglar.  In those days prior to wireless microphones, Zig ran around with a handheld microphone and lots of microphone cord so he could work the entire crowd.  He was very interactive with his audience and he asked a lot of questions.  If you responded to one of his questions, whether you were right or wrong, he threw you a wooden round TUIT.

I had no idea what it was at the time and after catching about a half dozen before the first break, I went up to him during the break and asked him…. “Mr. Ziglar, what is this thing?”  He immediately said… “First of all, from this moment on, just call me Zig.”  Then he went on to explain the TUIT to me this way.  He asked me… “What is the shape of this thing?”  I said… “Well, it’s round.”  “Yes it is and pronounce the word on the front side  (which was the capital letters of TUIT).”  I answered…. “Two It.”  He then said….  “That’s correct and what it means is once you have one of these you never have another reason for not getting around to the things you should do to better yourself.  And here is the sad part of life.  We have almost 1000 people here today and studies show less than 10% of them will ever do anything with the information I am sharing with them.  In others words, they will never get around TUIT.  But I am sure you will.”

Needless to say I got excited and said… “That is really cool.  Is it okay if I borrow this idea from you and make something like this for my company or do you have a trademark on this?”  He laughed and answered….  “Go right ahead and use it.  I borrowed it from somebody else.  It is a Southern thing I learned many years ago back in Mississippi.”  Well I did do that.  In fact, I ended up with a brass TUIT with my company name and phone number on one side and the TUIT on other and it has made me a lot of money ever since I did.  Today I have my name and website on it too.

One more note.  This was the days before the Internet and emails so when I got my first batch of brass TUIT’s, I mailed a few to Zig along with a thank you note.  A few days later, this wonderful man who was on the top of his world as a public speaker making tons of money daily said in his letter back to me….  “Wow, a brass TUIT.  With the money I am making I could never afford doing that.”  We corresponded off and on for years after that and I have always gone out of my way to see him whenever he speaks in our area.  Zig Ziglar taught me the real meaning of a round TUIT and I in turn have taught many thousands more.
